Hello Everyone,
Remember my previous post about How to Make a Peter Pan collar?
Well it turned out to be quite a hit so I decided to prepare a more detailed post about it.
Below there's a step-by-step explanation on how to make a Peter Pan collar with basic sewing skills.
It's very detailed and cost me some hard work :P   So, please pay my blog the credit when you're using any information / photo from the website.

Enjoy! :D

PETER PAN COLLAR SEW-ALONG:
What you need:
  • scissors
  • pen
  • pattern paper
  • measuring tape
  • adhasive tape
  • fabric for the collar

My choice of fabric for the top was a chiffon fabric with dark blue and mint green floral prints:

My choice of fabric for the collar was this leather-like yet also quite elastic navy blue fabric (isn't it gorgeous?!):

1- IF you have the pattern for a top / dress that you'd like to add the Peter Pan Collar on, that's great! (IF NOT, don't worry, start from Step 6 below)
Put your pattern on the table. What I have used for the top you may see on the first photo was a BurdaStyle pattern no.119 from March / 2012 issue.

2- Stick them together with a tape on your table (marked with a red line on the photo)

3- Put the pattern paper onto the pattern and make sure it doesn't move when you're drawing on it.

4- Decide on the length (thickness) of your collar and draw it onto the pattern by following the original neckline. Below photo is for the back

5- Now do the same for the front. Draw the front ending as you like.

6-IF  you're using an already existing top, fix it onto your desk / table with a tape and put the pattern paper on it.

7- Just like using a sewing pattern, draw the collar carefully onto the paper by following the original neckline for the front and back.

8- Once you have your pattern ready, cut the collar pieces x 2.
image
9- First stitch the sides for both of the collar pieces. Then with right sides together, stitch the front and back collar carefully.
image
10- If you leave the hems as they are, whey you turn them inwards, your collar would look angled. So, don't!
image
11- In order to avoid an angled collar and end up with a curvy shape, cut the extra bits as much as you can, either with a zigzag scissors or simply by having small clips on the hem.
image
12- Once you finish sewing the 2 collar pieces together, you can make an UNDERSTITCH if your collar fabric is a little stiff like mine. Do it as close to the stitch line as possible so that it won't look awkward when the collar is folded.
image
13- Now you're ready to close-stitch the collar.
image
14- Now pin your collar onto your top /dress like this.

15- You can baste it, or you can directly start using your sewing machine if you're as lazy as I am in basting!

Now you're done! You have a brand new outfit. You can use contrast colors and play with the shape as much as you like!

It's a great way to build your wardrobe with simple and cheap method, isn't it? :D
